Hey Cupcake!
30" x 40" acrylic on canvas

Cupcakes have become amazingly popular. So not to be left out of the commotion, I had to paint something cupcake. One of the trailer food vendors in Austin, Texas and one of the most well-known along South Columbus.

Bay Cafe
24" x 30" acrylic on canvas

You may recognize this cafe on San Francisco Bay looking south towards a marina and the city.

The Traveler
24" x 30" acrylic on canvas

I saw this man perusing a menu on Columbus Avenue in San Francisco.

George River
36" x 48" acrylic on canvas
available at
Adams Galleries,
Naples, FL

We like to go to Tin City when we're in Naples, FL and have lunch along the river. I've studied this landscape over shrimp and crab many many times.

Dusk on the Alley
36" x 48" acrylic on canvas
available at
Adams Galleries,
Naples, FL

Walking around Key West one late afternoon, I turned down this alley and felt like I was in a canyon of shadow and light.

Six Palms
30" x 40" acrylic on canvas
available at
Adams Galleries,
Naples, FL

A true urban landscape where the buildings are secondary to the lush surroundings. I spotted this in Naples, Florida.

Flag on the Square
16" x 24" acrylic on canvas

The flag is Texas and the square is Georgetown. It was winter when I last visited so the trees had no leaves.

Empire Cafe
30" x 24" acrylic on canvas

Some of the best lemonade and people-watching in Houston. This is the Empire Cafe on Westheimer.

2-Hour Parking
18" x 24" acrylic on canvas
available at Arata Fine Art Gallery
San Francisco

In college, I spent a lot of time in this neighborhood. This is only a few blocks from the Art Institute. I miss the beauty.
  2-Hour Parking

Marin
18" x 24" acrylic on canvas
available at Arata Fine Art Gallery
San Francisco

Same corner as 2-Hour Parking but the opposite side of the street. This is a block away from Coit Tower and a pretty steep walk so I rarely stand in that intersection. But it's worth the climb.

Clear Day
18" x 24" acrylic on canvas
available at Arata Fine Art Gallery
San Francisco

Chestnut at Jones - the southeast corner of the Art Institute. I used to walk past this spot on a daily basis and I do miss it. On a fogless day it looks like this.

Pizza Street
18" x 25" acrylic on canvas
available at Arata Fine Art Gallery
San Francisco

If it's a city block full of pizza restaurants,
you know it must be
North Beach in San Francisco.

Caffee Trieste
18" x 24" acrylic on canvas
available at Arata Fine Art Gallery
San Francisco

Caffe Trieste is North Beach's original espresso house.

Cactus Cafe
30" x 40" acrylic on canvas

Another Austin restaurant, but I didn't catch the name. I was focused on the cactus, the stone, and the huge variety of green hues in the scene. I studied this image from every angle. They all appealed to me.

Chuy's
30" x 40" acrylic on canvas

Chuy's is a very popular Tex-Mex restaurant in Austin. It's known for it's Elvis collection, which I didn't notice when I was there. I was probably too busy eating the food. The metallic discs on the facade was a challenge. I didn't really want to include them but they are as much of the restaurant as the bold colors.

Lunch at the Bridgeway Cafe
24" x 30" acrylic on canvas

My current favorite of my paintings. I guess it jogs fond memories of when I was in college in the Bay Area and visited Sausalito a lot looking for an escape from the concrete and gray of San Francisco. We recently visited Sausalito on the way to a show in Marin County. I think I used to buy clothes in the building that is now the Bridgeway Cafe.

Winter Sky
30" x 24" acrylic on canvas

If you go to the top of any building in Houston, Texas, you will see almost nothing but green. This scene is looking north towards downtown along Main Street. The orange roofs are Rice University.

Blue Shutters
18" x 24" acrylic on canvas
SOLD

The shutters weren't the only thing in this scene that caught my eye. I can't resist a potted palm. This is in the newer shopping area of Naples, Florida and is the street that leads to the Naples Pier.

Window Behind the Wall
18" x 24" acrylic on canvas
available at
Adams Galleries,
Naples, FL

This house is considered historic in Naples, Florida even though it was built around the 1950's. Naples is a relatively new area with a short but colorful history. I love the place and go there as often as I can. This house is typical of the older homes - covered up by palms and/or a wall

Maxine's
30" x 24" acrylic on canvas

Hot Springs, Arkansas is a gorgeous town with many historic buildings. The whole town is a National Park. This building along with the rest of the downtown area is included in the Park.

Back Stairs
36" x 36" acrylic on canvas

Friends of mine own some rental property in the Mission District of San Francisco. When I visited last they took me to see a unit they were remodeling. This was the view from the back stairs.

Eat at Jo's
30" x 40" acrylic on canvas

Austin, Texas has a lot of colorful eateries and this is probably the most colorful. This one is on South Congress. The State Capitol is in the background.

Crossing South Congress
24" x 36" acrylic on canvas

I was literally crossing South Congress Avenue in Austin when I captured
this image. The easter egg in
the painting is my car.

By the Slice
30" x 40" acrylic on canvas

While scouting South Congress for scenes to paint, this place kept drawing my eye. I had no intention of painting it, even after photographing it. But those large areas of bright red kept drawing me in. The pizza is really good too.

Waiting for Stevie Ray
30" x 40" acrylic on canvas
SOLD

The famous Continental Club where Stevie Ray Vaughn played Texas blues. They say he used to sleep on the pool tables there.

Bistro & Bar
30" x 40" acrylic on canvas

While wandering around downtown Houston one Sunday, I came across this restaurant at the corner of Main and Congress. It's probably one of the best looking businesses on Main Street and I had to paint it. It's located just a couple of blocks from the site of my birthplace.

Morning Coffee
20" x 30" acrylic on linen

Coffee shop in the financial district of San Francisco. I used to work nearby while I was in college. My eye went to the chaos of the cluster of coffee drinkers against the straight forms of the buildings behind them. Throw in the cigarette smoker for a little distraction.

Bay View
18" x 24" acrylic on canvas
available at Arata Fine Art Gallery
San Francisco

From the top of the San Francisco Art Institute you can see most of the bay area. This view looks north towards Sausalito but focusses on the houses along Francisco Street. My friends and I used to covet those houses for their beauty and location.

Hat Store
24" x 20" acrylic on canvas

Another view of the scene in The Shopper in Key West. The colors I saw were so intriguing I had to paint it twice. And the architecture of that street - Duval Street if I recall correctly - is beautiful.

View from Shotwell Street
36" x 18" acrylic on canvas
SOLD

On my recent visit to San Francisco, I stayed in a house on Shotwell Street in the Mission. This is the view from the upstairs side of the house.

Courtyard
20" x 10" acrylic on canvas

I went to college at the San Francisco Art Institute. I miss that place a lot. It has a (relatively) new section and an old section. When I attended, we were the first to use the space. This is the front door into the courtyard in the old section. No one seems to know when it was built or by whom. If I knew, I don't recall.

Lush Life
48" x 24" acrylic on canvas
available at
Adams Galleries,
Naples, FL

Found this house in the Florida Keys. I love the landscaping and both the shapes and colors in the large palm fronds. I livened it up with a pair on a bench from Marco Island.

Irish Pub
20" x 16" acrylic on canvas
available at
Adams Galleries,
Naples, FL

It was St. Patrick's Day. Green was everywhere. There was a blow-up leprechaun in front of a stark yellow building with a bright teal awning. Red and white table umbrellas, a lady with a colorful bag and a man in a flowered shirt. My eyes did a jig. So here it is - minus the leprechaun. I can't bring myself to paint blow-up creatures.

The Shopper
30" x 40" acrylic on canvas
available at
Adams Galleries,
Naples, FL

Another from my Key West series, this is shopping at dusk in downtown Key West. The shadows and highlights were vibrant that day and I'm a sucker for lights and darks. I'm loving painting on larger canvases.

Road to the Gulf
36" x 24" acrylic on canvas
available at
Adams Galleries,
Naples, FL

On the road that runs through the Keys, while still on Key Largo, I took a turn down a residential street that turned into a dirt road that ran off into the Gulf. The house was standing alone like it was abandoned and I think it was. Who could abandon such a wonderful place?

Blue Roofs of Key West
20" x 16" acrylic on canvas
available at
Adams Galleries,
Naples, FL

A residential street in the old part of Key West, very near the Hemingway House. The area is a mix of several eras of architecture. If you don't like the house you're looking at, look next door.
You may love that.

Green Chairs
10" x 8" acrylic on canvas

From the emerging Street Scene body of work, this painting took awhile to create simply because it was difficult to accept the funky 60's style mosaic building.

West Broad Street
20" x 24" acrylic on canvas

The main highway through Mineola is West Broad Street. Unfortunately this is not that street. I thought it was. But recently while driving through Lindale, TX, I saw this intersection and realized I'd mistitled the painting.

West Nineteenth
16" x 12" acrylic on canvas

Third painting of a storefront along West 19th Street in the Heights, Houston. We were at a gallery opening at M2 Gallery and caught these people taking it easy outside.

Old Hotel
20" x 16" acrylic on canvas

Same hotel as in Postcard from Mineola. When I went back, they had added a row of adirondack chairs. It's no longer a functioning hotel but I believe it houses a few people and a music studio.

East Texas Winter #1
24" x 20" acrylic on canvas
SOLD

Street in Mineola during the winter.
Winters in Texas always are a mix of
dead branches and greenery. I used a larger pallette than usual. I can't count how many different but similar greens are in this one.

East Texas Winter #2
24" x 20" acrylic on canvas
SOLD

This street is a few blocks over and closer to downtown thus the larger houses.

Red Peppers
20" x 16" acrylic on canvas

My latest still life. This one took a bit longer than the others because of the complexity of the design. I had a challenge with the pineapple but since I only imitate reality in these paintings, I managed to find a solution to the intricacy of the texture.

Green Carnations
8" x 10" acrylic on canvas

One spring day I gathered some flowers from the megamart and put them in a jar.
On a lawn chair.
And some other stuff.

Fast Lane
16" x 12" acrylic on canvas
SOLD

Obviously not the fast lane.
More like a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Blue Coffee Press
20" x 16" acrylic on canvas

The most colorful things
I could find around the house.
